These medicines calm inflammation, redness and itching at the skin surface. They come in different strengths and forms, including creams, ointments, lotions and solutions. A mild product may suit thin or sensitive skin, while stronger treatment may be chosen for thicker plaques or severe inflammation. The face, eyelids, skin folds and genitals absorb medicine more readily than many other areas, so they need particular caution. Topical steroids do not treat every bump or rash; acne, infection and other conditions may worsen or become harder to recognise when steroids are used without guidance.

Apply a thin layer to the affected area, wash your hands afterwards unless the hands are being treated, and follow the prescribed schedule. Do not share a tube or cover treated skin with a tight dressing unless a clinician has told you to. Avoid putting steroid cream near the eyes unless specifically instructed. If symptoms return repeatedly, arrange a review rather than extending treatment on your own. A clinician can match the strength and formulation to the diagnosis and body site.

Seek prompt medical advice if the rash spreads quickly, becomes painful, develops blisters or open skin, or is accompanied by fever. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or swelling around the eyes. Arrange review if the skin becomes unusually thin, develops easy bruising, or fails to improve as expected.
