Examples of targeted therapy

Unlike treatment chosen only by where a tumour began, targeted therapy is matched to a feature found in the tumour or its surrounding environment. The feature may be a changed gene, an overactive receptor, or a signal that encourages cells to divide. Some medicines block that signal; others mark cancer cells for immune attack or reduce the blood supply that supports tumour growth. Examples are used in conditions such as Bowel Cancer, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour, Lung Cancer and some forms of Leukaemia. The same drug is not suitable for every person with a particular cancer, because the relevant target must be present and treatment may depend on the tumour’s wider profile.

Ask whether tumour tissue or a blood sample should undergo molecular testing before treatment is selected. The result can identify a target, show that a particular medicine is unlikely to help, or reveal a change that needs further discussion. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, since targeted treatments can interact with other drugs. Monitoring may include examinations, blood tests and scans; the schedule depends on the medicine and your condition. Take the treatment exactly as prescribed and report new symptoms promptly rather than changing doses yourself.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a new rash, severe diarrhoea, fever, unusual bleeding, marked breathlessness, chest pain, yellowing of the skin, or swelling of the face. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, or sudden weakness. These symptoms can have several causes, but early assessment helps the team decide whether treatment, supportive care, or another evaluation is needed.

Which tumour feature is this treatment targeting? What test identified it, and how reliable is the result? How will we know whether the medicine is helping? Which side effects need a same-day call? Could this treatment affect fertility, pregnancy, driving, or other medicines?
