What should you know about what type of cancer Ewing sarcoma is?

A sarcoma is a cancer that begins in connective or supporting tissues, including bone, muscle, fat, cartilage, and related structures. Ewing sarcoma often arises in a bone, but a similar tumour can begin in soft tissue. It is not the same as a carcinoma, which starts in the lining or surface cells of organs and body structures. Symptoms vary with location and may include pain, swelling, or reduced movement. A symptom alone cannot identify the tumour type.

Doctors combine examination and imaging with a biopsy. Laboratory testing on the biopsy helps distinguish Ewing sarcoma from other sarcomas and from non-cancerous growths. Further scans help establish the extent of disease and support treatment planning.
