Widespread muscle aches: what to know

Influenza and COVID-19 can present with muscle aches alongside fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or unusual tiredness. Dengue Fever may present with fever, intense aches, headache behind the eyes, nausea, or a rash; recent travel and mosquito exposure matter. Malaria can present with fever, chills, sweating, headache, and aches after exposure in a malaria area and needs urgent assessment. Brucellosis can present with prolonged fever, sweats, joint or muscle pain, and exposure to unpasteurised dairy or infected animals.

Fibromyalgia may present with widespread pain, poor sleep, and difficulty thinking over a longer period. Hypothyroidism may present with aches, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, or low energy. The pattern, onset, recent activity, medicines, travel, and accompanying symptoms help separate these possibilities.

Rest from strenuous activity while keeping gentle movement within comfort. Drink regularly, eat if able, and use a cool environment if heat may have contributed. Paracetamol may be suitable for some people, but check the label and ask a pharmacist if you have liver disease, take other medicines, or are unsure. Avoid self-treating a fever after recent travel without medical advice, because some infections need specific testing and treatment.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, severe weakness, a rapidly spreading rash, dark urine, or severe pain. Get same-day medical advice for high or persistent fever, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or aches after travel to a malaria area. Arrange an appointment when aches persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or limit normal movement without a clear cause.
