Short answer

Evening sickness during pregnancy can occur at any time of day and needs attention if vomiting prevents fluids or food.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Try
Small snacks, frequent sips, rest, and fewer food smells
Watch for
Reduced urine, faintness, severe fatigue, or repeated vomiting

What the pattern may mean

Pregnancy-related nausea may be more noticeable in the evening after a busy day, an empty stomach, strong smells, or tiredness. Fatigue is common in pregnancy, but severe or worsening exhaustion deserves assessment. Anaemia can present with fatigue, breathlessness, paleness, dizziness, or a racing heartbeat. COVID-19 can present with fatigue, fever, cough, sore throat, or altered smell. Coeliac Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease, and other illnesses can also cause nausea or low energy, so do not assume every symptom is pregnancy sickness.

Keep track of vomiting, urine colour and frequency, food and fluids tolerated, abdominal pain, fever, headache, and any vaginal bleeding. This information helps a maternity or primary-care clinician judge whether you need treatment or tests.

Ways to ease symptoms

Take small sips often and keep a drink beside you. Try plain, carbohydrate-rich foods before getting very hungry, and choose small meals or snacks rather than a heavy evening meal. Cold foods may have less smell; rest between activities and avoid triggers you have identified. Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist about pregnancy-safe anti-sickness treatment before taking a medicine or supplement. Do not use alcohol to manage nausea or fatigue; Alcohol Use Disorder can affect health and pregnancy and needs compassionate medical support.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are vomiting repeatedly, feel faint, pass very little urine, or have a dry mouth and marked weakness. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fever, confusion, blood in vomit, chest pain, severe headache, or vaginal bleeding. Dehydration can develop quickly when pregnancy sickness limits drinking, and treatment may include monitored fluids and prescribed anti-sickness medicine.

Questions for your doctor

How can I tell ordinary pregnancy sickness from dehydration? Which anti-sickness options are suitable for me? Should my fatigue be checked for Anaemia or another condition? When should I contact the maternity unit rather than wait for an appointment?
