It works by blocking tumour necrosis factor, a messenger involved in inflammation. The medicine may ease inflammatory back pain and stiffness and help preserve day-to-day movement when it is suitable for you. It does not replace an individual treatment plan or exercises that maintain spinal and hip mobility.

Ankylosing spondylitis, also called axial spondyloarthritis, can cause inflammation around the spine and other joints. Etanercept is given by injection and is generally considered when symptoms remain active despite other appropriate care. Your specialist will consider your symptoms, examination findings, previous medicines, and health history before recommending it.

The response is assessed over time rather than after one injection. Improvement may involve less morning joint stiffness, easier movement, or better ability to sleep and exercise. Some people do not respond enough, and a different treatment may be discussed.

Use etanercept exactly as prescribed and learn the injection technique from your healthcare team. Tell them about infections, recent or planned vaccinations, tuberculosis exposure, liver disease, nerve symptoms, heart failure, pregnancy plans, or other medicines before starting or continuing treatment.

Keep moving within your limits. A physiotherapist can tailor exercise therapy for spinal extension, posture, breathing, strength, and joint mobility. Hydrotherapy may be useful when land-based movement feels uncomfortable. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without discussing the reason with your prescriber.

Contact your healthcare team promptly if you develop fever, a persistent cough, unusual tiredness, painful skin redness, or other signs of infection. Ask whether to delay an injection while you are unwell. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe weakness, new vision loss, or sudden neurological symptoms.

Arrange a review if pain, stiffness, or reduced range of motion is worsening, or if injection-site reactions keep returning. These changes may mean the treatment plan needs reassessment rather than self-adjustment.
