Essential oil for sebaceous hyperplasia: what to know

Sebaceous hyperplasia consists of enlarged sebaceous glands, often appearing as small flesh-coloured or yellowish facial bumps. The central dip can make them resemble other spots. Fragrance compounds and concentrated plant extracts do not remove the enlarged gland. They may cause stinging, dryness, allergic contact dermatitis, or lingering redness, particularly on delicate facial skin.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or burn a bump at home. Trauma can cause infection, a scab, or a mark, and a changing lesion should not be assumed to be sebaceous hyperplasia without examination.

Use a gentle cleanser and bland moisturiser, and stop any oil that causes discomfort. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss appearance-focused options. Depending on the number, size, and position of the bumps, treatment may include Electrosurgery or CO2 Laser Resurfacing. These procedures require a clinician to explain expected healing, pigment changes, and recurrence possibilities for your skin.
