What should you know about essential hypertension symptoms?

Essential hypertension means persistently raised blood pressure without one identifiable secondary cause. Many people feel well while pressure affects blood vessels and organs over time. Headache, dizziness, blurred vision or palpitations can happen, but these symptoms have many other explanations and cannot confirm hypertension.

Long-standing high blood pressure can contribute to problems involving the heart, brain and kidneys. Related conditions include heart failure, angina and chronic kidney disease. Obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea can be relevant factors in an assessment, but a symptom or risk factor alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Book a blood pressure assessment if readings have been raised, or if a clinician has advised monitoring. A diagnosis may require repeated readings taken correctly, sometimes at home or with a portable monitor. Sit quietly first, keep your arm supported, and record the time, reading and any symptoms.

Bring your log, medicines and relevant family history to the appointment. Do not stop prescribed treatment because you feel normal; symptom-free periods are common. Your clinician may also review weight, sleep, kidney health, diabetes risk and cardiovascular history.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, sudden trouble speaking, facial drooping, or weakness on one side. A sudden severe headache or sudden visual loss also needs urgent assessment. For recurring headaches, dizziness or blurred vision without these emergency signs, arrange a prompt clinical review.

Ask: Do I need home monitoring? Could any medicine, sleep problem or kidney issue affect my readings? What target is appropriate for me? How often should my pressure be reviewed, and which symptoms should trigger urgent help?
