What should you know about erythrodermic psoriasis?

Instead of distinct plaques, erythrodermic psoriasis can make much of the skin intensely red, tender, warm, and covered with fine or sheet-like scale. Itching, cracking, peeling, chills, and exhaustion may accompany the flare. The damaged barrier can increase fluid loss and make temperature regulation difficult.

Triggers can include abruptly stopping psoriasis medicine, infection, irritation, or another illness, but the cause is not always obvious. Contact a dermatologist urgently, especially when redness is spreading or large areas are peeling. Keep the skin cool, use bland moisturiser if it does not sting, drink fluids if you can, and avoid fragranced products, vigorous rubbing, and unplanned medication changes. Keep a list of current treatments and recent infections or new medicines for the assessment.

Go to emergency care for fever, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, breathlessness, chest pain, a racing heartbeat, or inability to drink. Same-day advice is also needed for severe pain, widespread cracking, pus, or rapidly worsening peeling. These signs can accompany infection, fluid imbalance, or loss of temperature control.

Ask whether this is erythrodermic psoriasis or another cause of widespread redness, which medicines should be paused or continued, how to protect cracked skin, and what follow-up plan will monitor recovery.
