Er:YAG refers to the laser medium that produces a wavelength strongly absorbed by water in skin tissue. In practice, a clinician adjusts the device’s energy, spot pattern and depth for the treatment area. It may gently ablate the outer surface or create precisely spaced treatment points, allowing healthier skin to form during healing. The machine itself is only one part of the procedure: assessment, eye protection, cooling or anaesthesia, and aftercare all affect the experience.

Tell the treating clinician about darker marks after past inflammation, active cold sores, recent tanning, medicines that affect healing, and any tendency to form raised scars. Arrive with clean skin and follow instructions about sun exposure and skincare products. After treatment, use the recommended cleanser, ointment and sunscreen; do not pick peeling skin or restart irritating products until advised. The treated area can look red, swollen or dry while the surface repairs.

Contact the clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, swelling becomes marked, blisters or pus appear, or you develop fever or a new eye symptom. These changes need assessment because infection, delayed healing or an injury near the eye may require treatment. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling or sudden vision changes.
