ERBB2 exon 20 insertion lung cancer: what to know

ERBB2, also called HER2, helps control signals involved in cell growth. An exon 20 insertion is a small genetic alteration that can keep growth signalling active. The finding describes the tumour’s biology; it does not by itself show how far the cancer has spread or predict one person’s outcome.

A tissue sample or, in some situations, a blood sample may be assessed through genomic tumour profiling. Results are interpreted alongside the biopsy report, scans, stage, symptoms, and general health. Lung cancer can spread to areas such as the brain, so the care team may discuss imaging as part of staging.

Ask whether the ERBB2 finding is confirmed, whether the sample was adequate, and which treatments fit the cancer’s stage. Options may include a targeted medicine, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery such as lung lobectomy, or a combination. The choice depends on resectability, spread, previous treatment, and your preferences.

Keep a record of medicines and new symptoms. A cancer team can also offer palliative care at any stage to relieve breathlessness, pain, fatigue, or emotional strain while cancer treatment continues.

Contact your cancer team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, severe headache, weakness on one side, or a new hoarse voice. Sudden severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or a major change in alertness needs emergency care.
