What should you know about Epstein-Barr virus hairy leukoplakia?

The patch often has a folded or hairy surface and may not rub away. It is associated with reduced immune protection, so its presence can prompt a clinician to review medicines, illnesses and other factors affecting immunity. A white patch has several possible explanations; appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A mouth examination helps distinguish hairy leukoplakia from thrush, irritation, ordinary leukoplakia and other lesions. A biopsy may be considered when the appearance is unusual, the patch persists, or the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Arrange an assessment with a dentist, doctor or oral specialist for a white tongue patch that persists or changes. Take note of when it appeared, whether it causes soreness, and whether it can be gently wiped away. Do not scrape it aggressively or apply unprescribed treatments.
