Epistaxis treatment at home

Most minor nosebleeds begin when a small vessel in the nasal lining is irritated by dryness, rubbing, a cold, allergic rhinitis, or forceful blowing. First aid helps a clot form at the bleeding point; it does not treat an underlying infection, nasal inflammation, blood-pressure problem, or medicine effect.

Keeping the nasal lining comfortable after bleeding stops may reduce irritation. Recurrent episodes need more than repeated home first aid and should be assessed.

Sit upright, lean slightly forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose with thumb and finger. Keep steady pressure while breathing through your mouth; do not release early to check. Spit out blood. When bleeding stops, rest and avoid nose blowing, picking, heavy lifting, and hot drinks for a short period. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on saline or moisturising products.

Seek urgent care if bleeding is heavy, follows an injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or continues despite proper pressure. Arrange a medical review for repeated nosebleeds, easy bruising, blood-thinning medicines, or symptoms of infection. Severe headache, chest pain, weakness, confusion, or trouble speaking requires emergency help.

Ask whether dryness, allergies, a cold, sinusitis, blood pressure, or a medicine could be contributing. Ask which product is appropriate for nasal moisture and when recurrent bleeding warrants an ear, nose, and throat assessment.
