Epidural injection in normal delivery: what to know

An anaesthesia clinician cleans your lower back, numbs the skin, and places a fine tube in the space around the spinal nerves. Medicine travels through the tube during labour. You can usually hear, speak, breathe normally, and take part in pushing, although your legs may feel heavy or less sensitive. Pain relief is often strong but pressure and tightening may remain. A monitor, intravenous line, and regular blood-pressure checks may be used because the medicine can affect sensation and blood pressure.

Tell your maternity team about medicines, allergies, back problems, bleeding conditions, and any previous difficulty with anaesthesia. Ask when the epidural can be placed and whether you can still change position or use a birthing aid. After placement, follow instructions about eating, drinking, walking, and bladder care. If the relief is uneven or fades, tell the team promptly so the dose or tube position can be assessed. Epidural use does not prevent a later change in birth plan if medical needs arise; your team can explain alternatives such as a Caesarean Section.

During labour, immediately report trouble breathing, severe dizziness, faintness, sudden weakness, or rapidly worsening numbness. After the tube is removed, seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent headache, fever, increasing back pain, leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or redness and discharge at the insertion site. These symptoms need clinical review rather than home observation.

Ask how the procedure may affect movement, how long it takes to work, what happens if it provides incomplete relief, and how your medicines or health history affect eligibility.
