Enfortumab vedotin and bladder cancer

Enfortumab vedotin is an antibody–drug conjugate. Its antibody component attaches to a target found on many bladder cancer cells, helping deliver the attached medicine into those cells. It is given by infusion, with the schedule and number of treatments set by the oncology team.

Whether it is suitable depends on the cancer’s type, stage, previous treatment, general health, and other medicines. It is not interchangeable with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or intravesical BCG therapy, which work in different ways and are used in different clinical situations.

Give the oncology team a complete list of medicines, allergies, diabetes treatment, and any previous nerve, eye, or skin problems. Keep infusion appointments and report new symptoms early. The team may check blood tests and review your skin, vision, blood sugar, and nerve symptoms while treatment continues. Cystoscopy, scans, and other assessments may be used to understand the bladder cancer and its response. Surgery such as bladder removal may be discussed when the overall treatment plan requires it.

Contact the treatment team urgently for a widespread blistering or peeling rash, facial swelling, trouble breathing, severe weakness, confusion, new vision changes, or marked numbness or weakness. Seek immediate help for chest pain or severe breathing difficulty. Difficulty passing urine, fever, or heavy blood in the urine also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask why this medicine is being considered, how it fits with earlier treatments, how infusions are monitored, which tests are needed, and which symptoms require same-day advice. Ask what alternatives may be appropriate if it is not suitable.
