Can endoscopy detect throat cancer?

A clinician passes a thin camera through the nose or mouth to view areas that are difficult to see during a routine examination. The images may reveal a growth, ulcer, swelling, bleeding, or a narrowing. Endoscopy can also help the team see where a sample should be taken. An unusual appearance does not by itself establish cancer; inflammation, infection, injury, or other non-cancerous changes can look abnormal.

During a biopsy, small pieces of tissue are examined in the laboratory. The result helps identify whether cancer cells are present and may provide details that guide treatment planning for throat cancer.

Take the referral seriously and ask what type of endoscopy is planned, whether numbing medicine or sedation will be used, and when results are expected. Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any difficulty swallowing or breathing. Keep the appointment even if symptoms improve, because the examination is intended to clarify a finding rather than judge symptoms alone. Further care may involve radiotherapy, tumour removal surgery, or chemotherapy, depending on the tissue result and the location and extent of disease.

Seek urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly worsening throat swelling, or bleeding that does not stop. Arrange prompt clinical assessment for persistent hoarseness, a new neck swelling, painful swallowing, or unexplained weight loss. Hoarse voice has many possible causes, but persistence makes examination more useful.

Ask where the camera will look, whether a biopsy is planned, what the possible findings mean, and which symptoms should prompt immediate help. Ask how results will be shared and whether another scan or specialist visit may be needed.
