End Polio Day: what it means

Poliovirus can spread between people, sometimes without obvious illness, and can damage the nervous system. A small number of infections can lead to weakness or paralysis. Progress in one place does not remove the need for protection elsewhere because infections can cross borders.

Use the occasion to learn how vaccination protects the individual and community, and rely on local health authorities for campaign information. Good hand hygiene supports general infection control, but it does not replace polio vaccination.
