Short answer

End of pregnancy fatigue is common as your body carries more weight, sleeps less comfortably, and prepares for labour, but severe, sudden, or worsening tiredness should be discussed with a maternity clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What late-pregnancy tiredness can mean

A growing baby, physical discomfort, frequent urination, heartburn, and interrupted sleep can leave you with less energy. Emotional strain and the effort of everyday movement may add to the feeling. Fatigue can also occur with anaemia, dehydration, infection, or another health problem, so the pattern matters: note when it began, whether rest helps, and any symptoms that come with it.

Antenatal checks can include questions about sleep, food and fluid intake, mood, blood pressure, and blood tests when clinically appropriate. These checks help separate expected tiredness from a problem needing treatment.

Practical steps

Pace activities, accept help with demanding tasks, and take brief rest periods before you feel depleted. Keep a regular sleep routine, use pillows to support a comfortable position, and drink fluids regularly unless your clinician has advised a restriction. Choose nourishing meals and snacks, and follow your maternity team’s advice about supplements. Do not start iron or other medicines solely because you feel tired.

When to seek medical care

Contact your maternity unit or clinician promptly if fatigue is intense, suddenly different, or stops you managing basic activities. Seek urgent help for breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, severe headache, vision changes, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, or noticeably reduced baby movements. Arrange a review if tiredness persists despite sleep and fluids, or comes with paleness, racing heartbeat, unusual thirst, vomiting, low mood, or swelling.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask whether your symptoms warrant a blood count or other checks, how to improve sleep safely, and which warning signs should prompt a call. Mention medicines, supplements, diet changes, snoring, restless legs, mood changes, and any reduction in fetal movement.

Questions people ask

Is fatigue near the due date always normal?

No. It often has ordinary physical causes, but severe, sudden, persistent, or symptom-linked fatigue needs maternity advice.

Can I take an iron supplement for pregnancy tiredness?

Ask your clinician first; testing may be needed because tiredness has several possible causes and unnecessary supplements can be unsuitable.
