What should you know about EMS machine physiotherapy?

Short answer
EMS machine physiotherapy uses controlled electrical pulses to contract selected muscles during supervised rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it feels like
- Tingling followed by rhythmic muscle tightening
- Main purpose
- Support selected muscles during rehabilitation
- Who adjusts it
- A trained physiotherapist
What EMS does
Small electrodes are placed on the skin over a muscle or muscle group. The device delivers repeated pulses that create a temporary contraction. A physiotherapist adjusts the strength, timing and placement to match the treatment goal, such as helping a weak muscle participate after injury or surgery.
You may feel tingling followed by rhythmic tightening. The sensation should be manageable; sharp, burning or worsening discomfort should be reported immediately. EMS is an aid to active rehabilitation, not a replacement for movement practice, strength work or assessment of the underlying problem.
How to prepare and use it
Attend an assessment so the clinician can check your skin, sensation, circulation and movement. Keep the electrode area clean and tell the therapist about implanted electrical devices, pregnancy, reduced sensation, epilepsy or a history of skin reaction. Do not place electrodes over broken skin or use a home device while driving, bathing or sleeping.
During a session, follow the therapist's instructions and perform the requested movement when prompted. Afterward, check the skin for persistent redness, blistering or irritation. EMS may be considered alongside physiotherapy for conditions such as /conditions/ankle-sprain/ or /conditions/carpal-tunnel-syndrome/.
When to seek care
Stop the session and seek prompt medical advice for chest discomfort, fainting, breathing difficulty, a new irregular heartbeat, severe pain, a burn or marked skin swelling. Arrange a clinical review if weakness, numbness, loss of balance or function is worsening rather than improving.
Questions to ask
Ask which muscle is being targeted, what improvement will be measured, how EMS fits with your exercise plan, and what sensations or skin changes should make you stop.

Questions people ask
Is EMS the same as exercise?
No. It can create a muscle contraction, but it does not replace active movement, progressive strengthening or functional practice.
Can everyone use an EMS machine?
No. Suitability depends on your health, sensation, skin and any implanted electrical device, so screening by a clinician is needed.
