Emergency medicine for high blood pressure: what to know

High blood pressure can be temporary after pain, stress, exertion, or a measurement error, or it can reflect poorly controlled Hypertension. Clinicians repeat the reading and assess the heart, brain, kidneys, and vision. The medicine and speed of treatment depend on whether there is evidence of organ injury, your usual readings, current prescriptions, and other conditions.

Angina, Heart Failure, and Chronic Kidney Disease can change treatment choices. Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea may contribute to long-term control problems, but they do not explain away sudden warning symptoms.

Sit quietly with your back supported and feet on the floor. Repeat the reading after resting, using a correctly fitting cuff and a bare arm at heart level. Note the result, time, symptoms, recent activity, and every medicine taken. Take prescribed treatment as directed; never double a missed dose, use a relative’s tablets, or take a rapid-acting medicine without a personal instruction.

If readings remain high but you feel well, contact your doctor or an urgent service for advice about review. Bring your medicine list and readings. A planned review can identify missed doses, interactions, sleep problems, or a need to adjust treatment.

Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, sudden vision loss, or a sudden severe headache. These symptoms may accompany Stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack and require immediate assessment. Do not wait for a home medicine to work or drive yourself.

Ask which readings need same-day review, how to measure correctly, what to do after a missed dose, and whether you need a written emergency plan. Tell the clinician about kidney, heart, sleep, weight, or neurological concerns and all non-prescription products.
