What should you know about embryo transfer failure?

Short answer

Embryo transfer failure means pregnancy was not detected after an embryo was placed in the uterus, and your fertility team can review what happened before planning next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

Transfer is the procedure that places an embryo inside the uterus. A negative pregnancy test means implantation or ongoing development did not result in a detectable pregnancy in that cycle. It does not identify one certain cause. Factors may involve embryo development, the uterine lining, timing, sperm or egg factors, or chance. A failed cycle is emotionally difficult, but it does not by itself predict what will happen in a future cycle.

What to do next

Follow the clinic's instructions about the pregnancy test and prescribed medicines. Do not stop hormonal support without checking with the fertility team. Arrange a review to discuss the embryo used, the lining preparation, transfer timing, and whether any change is sensible before another attempt. Your clinician may recommend waiting for bleeding, completing a planned test, or adjusting the next protocol. When to seek care

Contact your clinic promptly for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, fever, breathlessness, or marked abdominal swelling. Seek urgent medical help for collapse, intense one-sided pain, or trouble breathing. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the pregnancy result and should not be explained away as a failed transfer.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which result was confirmed and when medicines should change. You can also ask what the embryo and uterine-lining details show, whether another test is appropriate, what would be changed in a future cycle, and when it is medically and emotionally reasonable to try again.

Questions people ask

Does one failed transfer explain future fertility?

No. One result cannot identify every factor involved or determine the outcome of a later cycle.

Should progesterone be stopped after a negative result?

Ask your clinic when to stop; the timing depends on the test result and your treatment plan.
