Short answer

Razor bumps improve when shaving irritation and hair re-entry are reduced, with treatment matched to the affected skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Close shaving with repeated passes or pressure
Avoid
Picking, digging, and shaving over inflamed bumps

What is happening

A razor bump forms when a cut hair curves back into nearby skin and triggers inflammation. This is especially common after close shaving of coarse or curly hair, but similar bumps can come from blocked follicles or another rash. Ingrown hairs may itch, sting, or form small raised spots; scratching and squeezing can worsen inflammation and leave dark marks. Folliculitis is a possible alternative explanation when follicles are tender or contain pus.

What you can do

Pause close shaving while the skin settles. When you resume, soften hair with warm water, use a clean sharp razor, shave in the direction of growth with light pressure, and avoid repeated passes. Do not pick or dig out hairs. Loose clothing may reduce rubbing on body areas. A clinician can recommend an anti-inflammatory or follicle-focused treatment and assess whether laser hair removal is suitable for longer-term reduction. Razor bumps around the beard area can be assessed as pseudofolliculitis barbae; rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs may instead fit keratosis pilaris.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice if bumps spread, become increasingly painful, drain pus, form deep lumps, or leave repeated scars or dark marks. Prompt assessment is sensible when redness is rapidly expanding or fever develops, because infection may need treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps are ingrown hairs, folliculitis, or another condition; which shaving method suits your hair and skin; and whether prescribed treatment or laser hair removal is appropriate for your skin tone.
