An ECG machine receives signals from electrodes placed on the chest and limbs and prints or displays waveforms. A trained clinician reviews the tracing alongside your symptoms, examination, and medical history. It may help identify an irregular rhythm, changes in the heart’s electrical conduction, or patterns that need further assessment. The device records a short period, so an occasional symptom may not occur during the test.

An ECG is a diagnostic test, not a treatment. A normal tracing does not explain every type of chest discomfort, faintness, or palpitation, and an automated interpretation is not a final diagnosis. The clinician may recommend a longer monitor or other tests when symptoms come and go.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and limbs. Tell the clinician about symptoms, implanted devices, medicines, and any adhesive or skin sensitivity. You may be asked to rest quietly before and during the recording; keep still and breathe normally unless instructed otherwise. The electrodes may require small areas of skin to be cleaned, and removal can briefly pull body hair. Bring previous ECG reports if available so changes can be compared. You can ask the team to explain where the electrodes will be placed and when the result will be discussed.

Do not wait for a routine ECG appointment if you have chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness, new confusion, or palpitations with marked dizziness. Call emergency services for symptoms that are severe, sudden, or not settling. An ECG can support assessment, but urgent symptoms need immediate clinical evaluation even when a previous test was reassuring.

Ask why the ECG is being requested, whether you should continue your usual medicines, and when the tracing will be reviewed.
