What should you know about electron linear accelerator?

A linear accelerator, often called a linac, generates high-energy particles and directs them towards a treatment field. With electron mode, applicators and shaping devices help define the area receiving radiation. The treatment team uses measurements and imaging to set the beam, angle, field size and patient position.

The machine may rotate around you, but it does not touch you. You will hear sounds and may see lights while staff monitor you from nearby. External treatment does not make you radioactive. The technical name describes the equipment; it does not by itself identify the cancer type or predict the outcome.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow instructions about eating, medicines and skin products. Arrive in time for positioning, because small changes in posture can affect the planned field. Tell the radiographers if you have pain, anxiety, trouble lying still, or a device or dressing near the treatment area.

The beam delivery itself may be brief, but the appointment includes checks and positioning. Stay still and use the communication system if you need help. Follow the aftercare plan for the treated skin and attend review appointments so reactions can be assessed.

Call the treatment unit if the treated area becomes increasingly sore, wet, blistered or difficult to care for, or if symptoms interfere with drinking, eating, sleep or movement. Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, or rapidly worsening illness. Equipment questions and medical symptoms should be reported separately so the right person can respond.

Ask why electron mode is suitable, how the team will confirm the field, what you will notice during a session, and which skin changes should prompt a call. Ask whether your plan uses another beam type at any stage and how the linac team will protect nearby normal tissue.
