Electrolytes and IV therapy: what to know

A clinician places a small cannula into a vein and gives a measured solution while checking the treatment plan. The contents may include fluid, electrolytes or vitamins, depending on the reason for treatment. IV delivery can be useful when a person cannot absorb or drink enough, but it does not automatically correct fatigue or a vitamin deficiency. Fatigue may have causes such as vitamin B12 or vitamin D deficiency that need testing and targeted care.

Ask what problem the infusion is intended to treat, which ingredients it contains, and how the dose was selected. Share kidney, heart, liver and pregnancy information, allergies, medicines and previous reactions. Confirm that trained staff will monitor the cannula and stop the infusion if needed. During or after an infusion, report pain, swelling, redness or leaking at the cannula site, rash, wheezing, severe headache, chest discomfort, faintness or worsening breathlessness immediately. Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction or fluid overload. Arrange medical review if fatigue persists, because an infusion should not delay investigation of anaemia, infection, thyroid disease or a nutritional deficiency.
