What should you know about electrocardiogram uses?

A clinician may request an ECG when someone has palpitations, chest discomfort, dizziness, fainting or breathlessness. It can also be part of an assessment before certain treatments or when a known heart condition needs review. The recording may reveal an irregular rhythm or electrical pattern that guides the next question.

An ECG is one part of an assessment. It does not measure every aspect of heart health, and a brief recording may miss a change that comes and goes. The clinician relates the tracing to the timing and character of your symptoms.

Describe what you feel, when it begins, how long it lasts and what makes it better or worse. Bring a current medicine list and mention implanted devices, skin allergies or previous heart tests. Stay relaxed and still while electrodes are attached so the machine can capture a clearer signal.

Get emergency help for severe or persistent chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, fainting, collapse or sudden weakness. Arrange medical review if episodes of racing or irregular beats continue, even if a previous ECG did not show a clear problem.

Ask what question the ECG is intended to answer, how the result affects your care, and what alternative assessment is considered if symptoms are absent during the recording.
