EGFR-negative lung cancer: what it means

A negative EGFR result means the sample did not show the EGFR change that the test was designed to detect. It does not mean the cancer is harmless, and it does not identify the cancer’s stage. Test quality, the sample used and the panel of alterations examined can affect how results are interpreted.

Your team may review other molecular findings, the tumour type, scans and your health before recommending care. Options can include surgery for suitable localised disease, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or another systemic treatment.

Ask which EGFR test was used and whether other relevant biomarkers were assessed. Request a clear explanation of the stage and the purpose of each proposed treatment. Keep a list of medicines and symptoms, and tell the team about new problems rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, heavy coughing of blood, severe chest pain, fainting, new confusion, a seizure or sudden weakness. Contact your cancer team promptly for fever, worsening cough, new hoarseness or a rapid change in your ability to eat, drink or move.

Ask: Does negative mean no EGFR change in this sample or no change at all? Which other biomarkers matter? What is my stage? Why is this treatment recommended? When should symptoms trigger a call?
