What should you know about effects of brucellosis?

Brucellosis is a bacterial infection commonly associated with contact with infected animals or unpasteurised animal products. Illness may begin with fever, chills, tiredness, headache, night sweats, muscle aches or joint pain. Some people have symptoms that come and go. Without appropriate care, infection can persist and may affect joints, the spine, liver, heart or nervous system. The pattern of illness and exposure history helps a clinician decide which tests are needed.

Arrange a medical assessment if you develop a persistent or returning fever, unexplained sweats, marked fatigue or body pain after relevant animal or food exposure. Tell the clinician about travel, work with livestock, animal contact and dairy products. A blood test may support diagnosis, but results are interpreted alongside symptoms and exposure. If brucellosis is diagnosed, take antibiotic treatment exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it.

Seek urgent help for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, a severe headache with neck stiffness, or sudden loss of movement or sensation. Contact a clinician promptly for fever that persists or returns, worsening joint or back pain, or new swelling, because complications may need targeted assessment and treatment.
