The paper carries a visual trace produced by electrodes placed on the chest and limbs. The lines represent timing and electrical patterns; a clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms, examination, medicines, and medical history. The paper itself is a record, not a diagnosis.

Paper that is faded, damp, creased, incorrectly loaded, or unsuitable for the printer can make a trace difficult to read. Blank output may reflect a paper-feed or printer issue rather than a change in your heart.

A trained healthcare professional should load the specified roll or pack, check the orientation and paper markings, and confirm that the device prints a clear test trace. Keep the paper dry and protected from heat, direct sunlight, and pressure.

During an ECG, remain still, relax your arms, and avoid talking unless the clinician asks a question. Tell the clinician about chest discomfort, breathlessness, fainting, palpitations, or medicines before the recording begins.
