Treatment for eczema under the nose

Eczema under the nose needs gentle cleansing, frequent barrier moisturising and treatment selected carefully for this sensitive, easily rubbed area. Repeated wiping, a runny nose, saliva, and fragranced tissues can keep the skin inflamed. The rash may look red, dry, scaly, cracked, or sore, and it can extend into the crease beside the nostril.

Atopic dermatitis can affect the skin around the nose, but irritation from contact, nasal discharge, lip licking, or a product can look similar. Moisture trapped in the crease may soften the skin, while wiping creates tiny breaks. Crusting, yellow fluid, increasing warmth, tenderness, or rapidly spreading redness may indicate infection. A clinician may need to distinguish eczema from contact dermatitis or another facial rash before choosing treatment.

Rinse with lukewarm water or use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry with a soft tissue or cloth. Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser or barrier recommended for the area, especially after washing and wiping. Dab rather than drag tissues across the skin, and avoid scrubs, alcohol-based products, essential oils, and fragranced balms. Do not put steroid cream inside the nostril unless a clinician specifically tells you to. Treat ongoing nasal irritation with professional guidance rather than repeatedly rubbing the rash.

Arrange prompt assessment for pus, thick crusting, marked pain, fever, spreading redness, or swelling that is worsening. Seek urgent help if swelling involves the lips or tongue, or if breathing becomes difficult. If the patch persists, bleeds, repeatedly cracks, or returns despite gentle care, a clinician can check the diagnosis and prescribe a site-appropriate treatment.

Ask whether the rash is atopic dermatitis, contact irritation, or infection; which moisturiser is safe at the nostril edge; and whether nasal symptoms are maintaining the flare. Mention new tissues, cosmetics, toothpaste, and any medicine already applied.
