Eczema on fingers: what to know

Flares may affect the fingertips, sides of the fingers, knuckles or spaces between them. Skin can feel dry and tight, become red or scaly, or develop small itchy blisters. Repeated wet work, detergents, solvents, gloves, metals and friction can damage the barrier. Cracks at the fingertips may make typing, cooking or gripping uncomfortable. A sudden rash after a product suggests contact irritation or allergy; recurring eczema may have more than one trigger.

Use lukewarm water, a gentle fragrance-free cleanser and a thick moisturiser after every wash. For cleaning or prolonged wet work, wear suitable protective gloves and take them off if sweat builds up; a cotton liner may improve comfort. Avoid picking blisters or peeling loose skin. Cover painful splits with a clean dressing and reduce contact with detergents, solvents and fragranced products. If basic care does not control the flare, a clinician can assess the pattern and recommend targeted treatment.

Seek a review when finger eczema limits movement, affects work, keeps returning or does not improve with trigger avoidance and moisturising. Get prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, severe tenderness or crusting. Rapid swelling after contact with a product, especially with breathing or facial symptoms, needs emergency help. Recurrent blisters or one-sided changes may need assessment for another hand condition.
