Blood pressure checks help clinicians look for pre-eclampsia, a condition affecting blood vessels and organs during pregnancy or after birth. Eclampsia means a seizure has occurred in that setting; it can happen even when earlier warning signs were limited. A reading alone cannot confirm eclampsia. Clinicians also consider symptoms, urine findings, blood tests, neurological signs, and the stage of pregnancy or recovery after delivery.

Possible warning symptoms include a severe or persistent headache, changes in vision, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, nausea, vomiting, confusion, or feeling unusually unwell. These symptoms need prompt assessment because complications can affect both the pregnant person and baby.

If eclampsia is suspected, contact emergency services and do not drive yourself. Keep the person on their side on a safe surface, move hard objects away, and protect the head with something soft. Do not restrain the movements or place food, drink, or objects in the mouth. After the seizure, stay with them and report the timing, breathing, injuries, and any pregnancy or postpartum details. Hospital care may include seizure-control medicine, blood-pressure treatment, monitoring, and a plan for delivery when clinically appropriate.

Call emergency services immediately for a seizure, loss of consciousness, trouble breathing, severe headache with visual changes, confusion, or severe upper-abdominal pain during pregnancy or after birth. Do not wait for a home blood-pressure reading if serious symptoms are present. A seizure lasting several minutes, repeated seizures, an injury, or failure to wake normally makes the situation especially urgent.
