What should you know about an ECG machine monitor?

A standard ECG captures a short resting sample, while a monitor may watch the rhythm for longer or show it continuously in a clinical setting. Depending on the device, it may display a waveform, store events, or alert staff to a change that needs checking. An alert is not automatically a diagnosis; leads can loosen and movement can create noise, so trained staff review the signal and your condition.

Follow instructions about keeping electrodes attached, protecting equipment from water, and pressing an event button if you have been given one. Note the time and activity when palpitations, dizziness, or discomfort occur. Do not disconnect wires or silence an alert unless staff tell you to. Tell the team if adhesive irritates your skin or if a sensor becomes loose, because a gap can leave symptoms unrecorded.

Press the call button or seek emergency help for severe chest discomfort, major breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden confusion. Do not wait for a monitor alert to decide whether symptoms matter. If symptoms recur after you leave, follow the care plan and report their timing, duration, and associated activity.

Ask how long monitoring will continue, what an event button records, who reviews the stored information, and when you should expect an explanation of the findings.
