What should you know about EBV tonsillitis?

EBV tonsillitis can make the tonsils enlarged, red or coated, and swallowing may hurt. Swollen glands in the neck and fatigue may last beyond the throat pain. EBV is a virus, so its presentation can resemble bacterial throat infection; the symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause. A clinician may examine your throat and ask about illness duration, exposure and general symptoms. Testing can be considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms are substantial.

Rest, drink regularly and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Use only pain or fever medicine that is suitable for you and follow the label or clinical instructions. Antibiotics do not treat EBV itself, although a clinician may prescribe them when a separate bacterial infection is diagnosed. Do not share cups, utensils or toothbrushes while unwell. Return to normal activity gradually, and ask about exercise before resuming strenuous sport.

Arrange a GP consultation for severe or persistent throat pain, ongoing fever, worsening fatigue or symptoms that make drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, dehydration, confusion, fainting or severe one-sided throat swelling. Sudden severe abdominal pain also needs urgent assessment. Earache can occur alongside throat illness, but severe or persistent ear pain should be reviewed.
