What to eat after stomach flu

Short answer
After stomach flu, restart fluids first and then small, simple meals as nausea settles; choose foods you tolerate and return gradually to your usual diet.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace fluids with frequent small sips
- Food approach
- Small portions, then gradual return to usual meals
Why appetite may lag
Gastroenteritis can irritate the stomach and bowel, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps and loss of appetite. It is common to feel weak or eat less while the gut settles. Dehydration can develop when fluid losses exceed intake, so drinking is the first priority. Appetite does not need to return all at once, and forcing a large meal may worsen nausea.
Restarting food and drink
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When fluids stay down, try small portions such as soup, rice, toast, bananas, potatoes, yoghurt or other familiar foods that feel comfortable. Eat slowly and pause if nausea returns. Avoid alcohol and very rich, spicy or greasy meals until your digestion improves. Continue breastfeeding if applicable, and offer children fluids often with age-appropriate food.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical advice for inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe dizziness, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or a fever that concerns you. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term conditions can become dehydrated more quickly. Emergency care is needed for fainting, severe weakness or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which rehydration drink suits you, when to resume medicines, and whether ongoing diarrhoea, nausea or abdominal pain needs testing. Mention recent travel, sick contacts, blood, fever and any condition that affects fluid balance.

Not necessarily. If dairy worsens bloating or diarrhoea, pause it temporarily and retry later as you recover.
What if I vomit after eating?
Pause solid food, take tiny sips of fluid, and seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
