How to ease nausea

Short answer
To ease nausea, take small sips of fluid, choose bland foods when ready, rest away from strong smells, and watch for dehydration or severe pain.

What nausea can signal
Nausea is an unsettled feeling that may or may not lead to vomiting. It can accompany gastroenteritis or food poisoning, while acid reflux and gastritis may cause nausea with burning or upper abdominal discomfort. Gallstones can cause nausea with pain under the ribs. Heat exhaustion may bring nausea with heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, or a headache. Low blood glucose can cause nausea alongside shaking, sweating, hunger, or confusion.
Practical relief at home
Sit upright or rest on your side, loosen tight clothing, and get fresh air. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink slowly rather than taking a large drink at once. When your stomach settles, try small portions of plain food such as rice, toast, or soup. Avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and strong odours. Do not stop prescribed medicines or take an anti-nausea product without checking that it suits your age, pregnancy status, and other medicines.
When to seek medical care
Get urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomit containing blood or resembling coffee grounds, black stools, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Seek prompt advice if nausea follows a head injury, occurs during pregnancy with inability to keep fluids down, or continues without a clear reason.
Questions for your doctor
What pattern of symptoms might identify the cause? Which fluids or medicines are suitable for me? Do I need tests if nausea returns after meals or comes with pain, fever, or weight change?
