Earwax buildup and difficulty hearing: what to know

Earwax buildup can block the ear canal, making hearing seem muffled or reduced until the blockage is assessed and safely cleared. You may also notice fullness, an earache, or ringing in the affected ear. Hearing changes can have other causes, so an examination is useful when the cause is uncertain or symptoms do not settle.

Earwax is made in the ear canal and normally moves outward on its own. When it collects into a plug, it can physically reduce the passage of sound to the eardrum. This may make voices, television, or nearby sounds seem quieter or less clear, often on one side. A blocked sensation may become more noticeable after bathing if moisture sits against the wax. Reduced hearing is a symptom that earwax buildup can present with; it does not by itself show that wax is the cause. A clinician can look inside the ear and check for a plug, irritation, infection, or another reason for the change.

Do not put cotton swabs, hairpins, or other objects into the ear canal; they can push wax deeper or injure the skin. Keep the ear dry while it feels blocked and avoid home tools that scrape or suction inside the canal. A healthcare professional can advise whether softening drops are suitable, particularly if you have ear tubes, a known hole in the eardrum, previous ear surgery, or significant pain. If wax is confirmed as the cause, an appropriate service may remove it using a method suited to your ear. Hearing should be reassessed if it remains reduced after removal.

Arrange medical advice promptly for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, fever, marked dizziness, or new weakness of the face. Seek assessment if hearing changes follow an injury, if the ear is completely blocked, or if symptoms continue despite reasonable self-care. Ringing that is new, one-sided, or accompanied by dizziness or hearing loss also deserves an ear examination. Do not assume a hearing problem is only wax when warning symptoms are present.
