What should you know about early stye?

Short answer

An early stye is a tender, localised swelling at the edge of an eyelid, often with redness and irritation; gentle warmth and clean eyelid care can help while it settles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an early stye means

A stye, also called a hordeolum, is an inflamed spot involving an eyelash follicle or an oil gland in the eyelid. It may begin as a sore point, a gritty feeling, or a small red bump before a visible head develops. The eyelid can feel swollen, and blinking or touching the area may be uncomfortable. A stye is usually limited to one area of the lid and should not change your vision. Eye discharge or widespread redness can point to another or additional eye problem, so these symptoms deserve attention if they are prominent.

What you can do now

Wash your hands, then place a clean, comfortably warm cloth over the closed eye for several minutes. Repeat this during the day with a freshly cleaned cloth. Keep the eyelid clean, avoid rubbing or squeezing the bump, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the area feels better. Do not share towels, flannels, or eye products. If a crust forms, soften it with warmth and wipe gently rather than picking at it. These measures support natural drainage and reduce irritation, but they do not replace an examination when symptoms are severe, spreading, or persistent.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if the swelling is getting larger, redness is spreading beyond the eyelid, pain is significant, or the problem is not improving with simple care. Seek prompt assessment for vision changes, marked sensitivity to light, severe eye pain, fever, or swelling around the eye. A clinician can check whether the lump is a stye and whether another condition needs treatment. A GP consultation is also sensible when styes keep returning or interfere with daily activities.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Does this look like a stye or another eyelid condition? Should I continue warm compresses, and how should I clean the lid? When can I restart contact lenses or eye makeup? What changes should prompt an urgent review? If the swelling returns, could eyelid inflammation or a blocked oil gland be contributing?

Questions people ask

Should I squeeze an early stye?

No. Squeezing can irritate the eyelid and spread inflammation; use gentle warmth and keep the area clean instead.

Can I wear contact lenses with a stye?

It is safer to pause contact lenses while the eyelid is sore or swollen and seek advice if symptoms affect the eye itself.
