What should you know about early stage lung cancer symptoms?

Early lung cancer may be discovered during imaging before a person feels unwell. When symptoms occur, they can include a cough that persists or changes, breathlessness, chest discomfort, coughing blood, repeated chest infections, unexplained tiredness, appetite change, or hoarseness. These signs have many possible causes, including infection and other lung conditions. A symptom does not by itself establish lung cancer.

Arrange a clinical review if a respiratory symptom persists, returns, or differs from your usual pattern. Assessment may include examination, chest imaging, and a tissue sample when appropriate. If cancer is confirmed, staging and genomic tumour profiling can help guide treatment choices. Depending on the tumour and your health, care may involve lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other specialist treatment.

Contact a clinician for a lasting cough, recurring chest infection, unexplained breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or hoarse voice. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, heavy or ongoing bleeding, new confusion, sudden weakness, or a seizure.

Ask which test is needed first, whether a biopsy is planned, what stage has been identified, whether tumour profiling could guide therapy, how treatment may affect breathing, and which symptoms require urgent help.
