What should you know about early stage cat eye melanoma?

Eye melanoma, also called uveal or ocular melanoma, can involve structures such as the choroid, ciliary body, or iris. Early stage describes a tumour that has not been identified as having spread beyond its starting area. Eye examination, ultrasound, and other scans help map its position and size. Some eye melanomas cause no noticeable symptoms and are found during a routine examination.

Arrange care with an ophthalmologist experienced in eye tumours and attend the recommended imaging visits. Treatment is selected according to the tumour’s location, dimensions, vision needs, and overall health. Brachytherapy places a radiation source close to the tumour; other radiotherapy approaches may be suitable for selected cases. Ask how each option affects sight, eyelids, and future monitoring.

Report new blurred or distorted vision, flashes, floaters, a shadow in the visual field, eye pain, or a visible change in the iris. Sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, marked redness, or an injury after a procedure needs urgent medical attention.
