Early signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint condition. Joint pain or joint swelling can affect fingers, toes, knees, ankles or the spine. Morning joint stiffness that eases as you move may be a useful clue. Some people notice tenderness where tendons attach to bone, heel pain, fatigue, or a whole digit becoming sausage-shaped. Skin psoriasis may be subtle or may appear after joint symptoms, so the absence of an obvious rash does not settle the question.

Record which joints are affected, when stiffness occurs, and whether symptoms come and go. Photograph visible swelling or nail changes during a flare. Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with walking, gripping or sleep. A clinician may examine your joints and skin and decide whether blood tests or imaging are useful. Treatment can include prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and a tailored physiotherapy plan.

Seek urgent medical help for a suddenly hot, very swollen joint with fever or feeling unwell, because infection needs prompt attention. Get same-day advice for severe eye pain, marked redness, light sensitivity or blurred vision. Otherwise, book an appointment promptly when swelling lasts, several joints become involved, or morning stiffness is repeatedly limiting your routine.
