Early scalp psoriasis: what to know

Scalp psoriasis can appear as areas of skin redness covered by dry, silvery or whitish scaling. It may itch, feel sore, crack, or shed flakes onto clothing. Patches can affect the scalp alone or extend onto the forehead, behind the ears, or the neck. Dry Skin, dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and contact reactions can look similar.

Scratching or forcefully lifting scale may cause bleeding and can irritate the scalp further. Hair loss may occur temporarily when inflammation or scratching is significant, so report noticeable shedding rather than treating it as ordinary flaking.

Use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, loosen scale gently after softening it, and avoid picking. Pause harsh dyes, fragranced products, and vigorous brushing while the scalp is inflamed. Keep nails short and use a cool compress for brief itch relief.

A clinician can recommend a scalp-directed medicine and explain how to apply it through the hair. Do not borrow steroid or psoriasis treatments, because strength, duration, and location affect safety. Take photographs if the pattern changes before your appointment.

Arrange an examination for persistent scaling, recurring plaques, cracks, bleeding, marked redness, or itch that affects sleep. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading warmth, severe pain, fever, or rapidly worsening inflammation. New joint swelling, prolonged morning stiffness, or painful nails should also be mentioned because psoriasis can involve more than the scalp.
