Early pregnancy and feeling so tired

Short answer
Feeling very tired in early pregnancy is common as the body adapts, but extreme, worsening, or unexplained fatigue deserves a clinical review.

Why fatigue can happen
Early pregnancy brings hormonal shifts, changes in circulation, emotional demands, and increased energy needs. Sleep may also be interrupted by nausea, urination, stress, or discomfort. Tiredness alone does not identify a specific illness.
Fatigue can also accompany anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, low mood, dehydration, or inadequate food intake. A clinician may ask about sleep, diet, bleeding, breathlessness, palpitations, mood, and medicines, and may arrange blood tests when appropriate.
Ways to support your energy
Rest when you can, keep a regular sleep routine, drink fluids, and choose small balanced meals if nausea makes eating difficult. Gentle movement may help if you feel well enough, while overexertion can make recovery harder. Accept practical help with work, travel, and household tasks.
Do not begin iron or other supplements for fatigue without advice, because the cause matters and some products are unsuitable in pregnancy. Keep prenatal appointments and mention fatigue that interferes with ordinary activities.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for fainting, chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange a prompt review if fatigue is worsening, comes with fever, persistent vomiting, racing heartbeat, marked sadness, or breathlessness with routine activity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms suggest anaemia, thyroid disease, infection, dehydration, or another cause; whether blood tests are appropriate; which supplements are safe; and how much activity and rest are suitable for you.

Questions people ask
Is severe tiredness always part of early pregnancy?
No. Fatigue can be expected, but severe or worsening symptoms may have another cause and should be discussed with a clinician.
Should I take iron for pregnancy fatigue?
Only after pregnancy-aware medical advice, because fatigue has several possible causes and iron is not appropriate for everyone.
