Short answer

Early pregnancy restless legs cause an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, often during rest or at night, and may be linked with low iron or another health issue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the sensation can mean

You may feel crawling, pulling, tingling, throbbing, or an inner need to move. Symptoms commonly become more noticeable when sitting or lying down and may ease briefly when you walk, stretch, or shake your legs. Pregnancy can change iron requirements and sleep patterns, which may contribute. Restless legs can also occur with iron-deficiency anaemia, kidney disease, or peripheral nerve problems, so persistent symptoms deserve a proper review rather than self-diagnosis.

Keep a note of when symptoms start, whether one or both legs are affected, and how much sleep they disturb. This helps distinguish restless legs from cramps, swelling, or pain caused by another problem.

Ways to ease symptoms

Gentle calf and thigh stretches, a short walk, massage, or a warm bath before bed may help. Keep a regular sleep routine and reduce caffeine if it seems to worsen the urge to move. Avoid starting iron tablets or other supplements without advice: a clinician can check your blood count and iron stores and choose a pregnancy-appropriate dose if needed. Do not use someone else’s medicine.

When to seek care

Arrange pregnancy or primary-care advice if symptoms are frequent, worsening, preventing sleep, or accompanied by marked tiredness, breathlessness, paleness, or a fast heartbeat. Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided leg swelling, warmth, redness, or significant pain, especially with chest pain or difficulty breathing. Those features need assessment for causes beyond restless legs.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms be related to iron levels, anaemia, medicines, or another condition? Which tests are appropriate in pregnancy? What non-drug measures are suitable, and when should I contact the maternity team?

Questions people ask

Can restless legs harm the baby?

The sensation itself is not usually dangerous, but severe sleep loss or a treatable cause such as low iron should be discussed with your maternity clinician.

Should I take iron for restless legs?

Only after a clinician reviews your symptoms and, when appropriate, checks iron status and recommends a suitable product.
