Early pregnancy muscle aches: what to know

Short answer
Early pregnancy muscle aches may come from body changes, fatigue, or altered movement, while fever or severe localised pain needs medical review.

Why aches may happen
Mild aching can follow poor sleep, physical effort, tension, or changes in posture and movement. Pregnancy can also make ordinary discomfort feel more noticeable. Describe where the ache is, when it began, whether it moves, and whether activity or rest changes it.
Muscle aches with fever, chills, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea, rash, or recent travel may point to an infection such as influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria, or brucellosis. Ongoing widespread pain and fatigue can have other explanations, including fibromyalgia or hypothyroidism. The ache does not determine the cause by itself.
Gentle self-care
Rest from strenuous activity, keep gently mobile, and use comfortable support for your back or limbs. A warm—not hot—shower or compress may soothe tight muscles. Drink fluids and eat regularly if nausea allows. Do not take painkillers, herbal products, or anti-inflammatory medicines without checking pregnancy suitability with a pharmacist or clinician.
If you have fever or feel unwell, contact your maternity team for advice about testing and treatment. Note your temperature, travel history, insect exposure, sick contacts, and any new medicines so the assessment is focused.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, weakness, trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or a painful swollen limb. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, persistent vomiting, rash, or aches after travel to a malaria or dengue risk area.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which pain-relief options are suitable, whether you need infection testing, and what activity is safe. Tell the clinician about fever, travel, animal contact, insect bites, urinary symptoms, and any long-term thyroid or pain condition.

Questions people ask
Are muscle aches common in early pregnancy?
Mild aches can accompany fatigue, tension, activity, and changes in movement. New severe pain or aches with fever should be assessed.
Can infection cause muscle aches during pregnancy?
Yes. Infection-related aches often occur with symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, rash, vomiting, or diarrhoea, so contact a clinician if these appear.
