What should you know about early nodular melanoma?

Nodular melanoma is a type of Melanoma that often grows outward as a firm bump rather than slowly changing within a flat mole. It may be black, brown, pink, red, or close to the colour of your skin. Warning features include a new lesion, visible growth, uneven colour, bleeding, crusting, tenderness, or a sore that does not settle. A smooth or small surface does not rule it out. Many skin bumps are benign, so the appearance is not a diagnosis; a clinician needs to examine the lesion and may remove it for laboratory analysis.

Arrange a prompt dermatology appointment for a new or changing raised lesion. Take a clear photograph with a scale beside it and record when you first noticed change, but do not delay assessment while monitoring it. Diagnostic evaluation commonly includes a close skin examination and Surgical Excision or another biopsy approach. If melanoma is confirmed, the report helps determine whether additional Skin Cancer Surgery, a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, or further treatment should be considered. Do not pick, shave, or burn the lesion yourself.

Seek urgent clinical review for rapid enlargement, repeated bleeding, ulceration, marked pain, or a lesion that changes noticeably over a short period. New neurological symptoms such as severe headache, weakness, confusion, seizure, or vision change require emergency care, whether or not a skin lesion has been diagnosed. Once melanoma is confirmed, follow the oncology team’s schedule for staging and Follow-Up After Cancer Treatment. Treatments such as Immunotherapy are selected according to the confirmed diagnosis and stage.
