The pathology report supplies details that affect care, including the melanoma's thickness, surface changes, and whether the edges contain abnormal cells. The clinical team also considers the site, overall health, and examination findings. Early disease is often localised to the skin, but the word early does not describe one identical treatment for everyone. Staging may involve examination, imaging, or discussion of nearby lymph nodes when the report indicates it.

Surgical excision removes the melanoma and a planned margin of nearby skin. Depending on the pathology, a wider skin-cancer operation or tumour-removal surgery may be advised. A sentinel lymph node biopsy can help assess selected melanomas with a meaningful risk of reaching nearby nodes. Immunotherapy is not needed for every early case; it may be discussed when stage and pathology indicate a role. Follow-up after cancer treatment supports skin checks and monitoring for recurrence or a new melanoma.

Keep the treatment appointment even if the lesion has been removed by biopsy, because the biopsy may not have taken the full recommended margin. Seek prompt review for wound separation, spreading redness, pus, fever, or uncontrolled bleeding. During follow-up, report a new changing mark, a firm lump near the scar, persistent swollen nodes, or unexplained symptoms rather than waiting for the next routine visit.

Ask what stage and thickness the report shows, whether the margins are clear, and why a particular operation or node test is recommended. Discuss expected healing, scar care, possible side effects, the purpose of any immunotherapy, and the timing of surveillance visits.
