What should you know about early induction of labour?

A maternity team may discuss early induction when there is concern about blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, the baby's growth, reduced fluid, or a pregnancy that needs closer supervision. The decision balances the timing of birth with the risks of continuing the pregnancy and depends on your examination, gestational age and the baby's condition.

The cervix may first be softened with medicine or a device. A membrane sweep can sometimes be discussed before formal induction. If the cervix is ready, the team may break the waters and use oxytocin through a drip to strengthen contractions. Induction can take time and may still lead to assisted birth or caesarean section if labour does not progress or concerns arise.

Ask why birth is being recommended now, what alternatives are reasonable, and where you should attend. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, previous caesarean birth and your preferences for pain relief. Pack essentials and arrange support, while understanding that the plan can change with your examination or the baby's monitoring.

Call your maternity unit urgently for heavy bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, visual changes, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling, fever, or reduced fetal movements. These symptoms need assessment whether or not induction has been planned.
