Earache with tonsillitis

Inflamed tonsils can send pain along shared nerve pathways towards one or both ears, even when the ear itself is healthy. Sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, swollen glands, voice changes, and visible tonsil swelling can accompany tonsillitis. Earache, Fever, Sore Throat, and Swollen Glands are useful symptoms to report together.

Tonsillitis may be viral or bacterial. Strep Throat is one bacterial possibility, but symptoms alone cannot confirm it. An examination may include looking at the throat and ears and deciding whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, rest, and avoid smoke. Gargling with appropriately prepared salt water may soothe an adult throat. Use a labelled pain reliever if it is safe for you; ask a pharmacist if you take regular medicines or have a chronic condition.

Do not share antibiotics or use an old prescription. Antibiotic Treatment may be considered when a clinician identifies a bacterial cause or another clear indication. Take any prescribed course exactly as directed and seek advice if swallowing becomes harder or symptoms change.

Get urgent medical help if you struggle to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, develop a muffled voice, cannot open your mouth properly, or have rapidly worsening one-sided throat swelling. Arrange prompt GP Consultation for severe pain, dehydration, persistent fever, ear discharge, or symptoms that are not settling.

Ask whether the earache is referred from the tonsil, whether you need a strep assessment, and which pain-relief options fit your medical history. Ask what signs would mean returning urgently and whether anyone close to you should be tested.
