Earache in the left ear: what should you know?

One-sided earache often reflects a local issue, such as wax pressing in the left canal, irritation near the opening, or inflammation behind the eardrum. A cold or sinusitis may affect pressure on one side, and tonsillitis or dental and jaw problems can refer pain toward one ear. A middle-ear infection can present with deep pain, fullness, fever, or reduced hearing. The important clues are the start of the pain, its depth, and associated symptoms—not simply that it is on the left.

Compare hearing on both sides without inserting anything into either ear. Notice whether chewing, swallowing, lying down, or touching the outer ear changes the sensation.

Rest the ear from earbuds and headphones, keep it dry, and avoid cotton buds, hairpins, or home remedies in the canal. A warm cloth over the outer ear can be comforting. If appropriate for you, follow the label directions for a pain reliever; a pharmacist can help if you are pregnant, treating another condition, or taking other medicines. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment, because they do not treat every cause of ear pain.

Seek medical advice for persistent or worsening left-sided pain, fever, fluid or blood, swelling, marked tenderness, ringing, dizziness, or a new change in hearing. Urgent care is needed for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness, or severe pain with a very unwell appearance. A clinician should also assess recurrent one-sided symptoms.
